On 7/21/09, our illustrious Georgia governor - King Sonny - requested that teachers take a 3-day furlough - days without pay. DURING the pre-planning week that is *supposed* to be used to prepare for the new year.
According to the Federal Stimulus Recovery Act website, Georgia is to receive $2.6 billion dollars for EDUCATION. The Georgia Stimulus website only totals $2.3 billion dollars. So - where is the extra $300 million dollars Sonny?
Hmmm....wouldn't it be nice if our leaders would actually LEAD by example. King Sonny is not taking unpaid furlough days - if he took 3 days off - it would probably amount to a MUCH more significant amount of money. If our legislators actually stepped up to the plate and did the same - wow, we would probably be fine.
King Sonny has, in the past, made numerous promises to public education in Georgia - earning him his re-elected status. Now, his true colors as the Anti-Education Governor are showing true.
Oh - and the King Sonny designation is from our elected officials decision to GRANT him (Sonny) authority to make whatever cuts HE DEEMS FIT to balance the budget. My thoughts - our legislators need to get off their asses and get back to the capital and fix it. Isn't that why we elected you? To uphold the values this nation was founded upon and actually WORK for your constituents? Not to take an extended vacation in the middle of a budget crisis. So - we have granted King Sonny freedom to do whatever he pleases with government money. Sounds an awful like a dictatorship doesn't it? Wow - and I thought the United States still practiced democracy......
